Mississippi Man
I admittedly found this one by chance, while poking through the upcoming shows at the Echo. Skimming through the show listings, rather lazily, my eye caught the phrase “pop-folk” and of course, my eyes lit up in response. I couldn’t not check this band out, despite having never heard of them before. Needless to say, the first song I listened to had me hooked. Homegrown L.A. locals, the fivesome are half Silver Lake-chic, half … Old West? Maybe a better way to describe is that they’re low-fi, intentionally rough production-brand garage indie with a Southern twang, but they don’t sound like a bunch of pretentious d-bags. Crazy concept, I know. And since the Echo is into them enough to give them a full residency this month, chances are high you’re going to be likewise and find you’re all about these dudes as well. - Brien Overly
