What’s Happening in Los Angeles

Thursday, Sept. 21
BREAKING THE MODE: CONTEMPORARY FASHION FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION @ LACMA
Fashion is hot nowadays. New York Fashion Week just happened and Bravo’s hit TV show, “Project Runway” has everyone inspiring to be their very own Santino Rice. While it seems that everything fashion seems to only be projecting out from the East Coast, we in Los Angeles shouldn’t feel left out considering the works of Jean-Paul Gaultier and Christian Dior will be highlighted in a new exhibit entitled Breaking The Mode; Contemporary Fashion From the Permanent Collection, all encased in the permanent location at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Make it work ala Tim Gunn and go, go, go. LACMA is located at 5905 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.lacma.org.

Friday, Sept. 22
LOS ANGELES DODGERS VS. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS @ Dodger Stadium
After a potential scare from the San Diego Padres this weekend, just three simple words eased all that pain away: NOMAH, NOMAH, NOMAH! Sure the four homers in the ninth helped, but it was Garciaparra’s heroics in the 10th that sealed the deal and once again led the Dodgers atop the NL West division, with San Diego close behind them. Lets hope the Dodgers use all that added adrenaline from early this week and close up the division. First up: the Arizona Diamondbacks. Dodger Stadium is located at 1000 Elysian Park Avenue in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.dodgers.com.

Saturday, Sept. 23
RATATAT @ Glasshouse
Ever wondered what it would sound if you had an old school classic Nintendo system that was really crunked out to the max? It sounds weird but the beats emanating from the duo Ratatat sounds exactly like that. Their self titled release brought hip hop beats mixed with scorching guitars to an electronica genre in need of a kick. Now back with their sophomore release, aptly named “Classics,” the boys from Brooklyn (Mike Stroud and Evan Mast) are set to make everyone on the floor dance. Get ready Pomona.  Tickets are available on www.ticketmaster.com. The Glasshouse is located at 200 W. Second St., in Pomona. For more information visit http: //theglasshouse.us

Sunday, Sept. 24
DANGEROUS STRANGER @ Bigfoot Lodge
Mom and dad always told us, never talk to strangers. Bigfoot Lodge in Los Feliz has itself a very own dangerous stranger, but need not fear, all the strangers will be just like you: nice, maybe a little bit of hipster in them, but all about dancing. At Dangerous Stranger at the Bigfoot Lodge, the adorned witness various different but really bizarre home videos from a man simply named Spencer the Movie Guy.  Spencer is also the DJ so watch and move. Bigfoot Lodge is located at 3172 Los Feliz Boulevard in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.bigfootlodge.com

Monday, Sept. 25
THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS SHOW @ Largo
Paul F. Tompkins knows how to dress. He dresses well, (he dresses good) but did I happen to mention that he’s just plain hysterical. At The Paul F. Tompkins Show at Largo, the very funnyman will look to make sides split; martinis shake, and old school comedy fly. Comedy acts, musicians, and very special guests have been known to pop in from time to time, including Jack Black and former Late Night with Conan O’Brien sidekick Andy Richter.  So who knows you might be lucky.  Largo is located at 432 N. Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.largo-la.com

Tuesday, Sept. 26
ON THE COUCH CARTOONS FROM THE NEW YORKER @ Skirball Cultrual Center
Like it or not, therapist sessions are funny. Maybe it’s all the many analyst sessions this writer has seen in tons of Woody Allen films or its just my love for the original Bob Newhart Show, where some of the most bizarre of sessions faced Dr. Hartley (Newhart). You know what else is funny? Cartoons. A new exhibit from the Skirball Center looks at this time honored occupation, with On the Couch Cartoons from the New Yorker. Over 50 cartoons published in the venerable magazine are for all eyes to see. And it’s OK, you can go crazy over the cartoons. The Skirball Cultural Center is located at 2701 North Sepulveda Boulevard in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.skirball.com.

Wednesday, Sept. 27
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL DELIRIUM @ Staples Center
Holy production values! 540 square feet of multimedia space, 18 projectors, and live images on floors, screens and even in the audience! Whew! Cirque du Soleil out did themselves for Delirium, the first ever arena show, which will also mark the first time that lyrics have been added to the already popular instrumental tracks meaning musicians and cirque singers will be on stage, being careful that someone leap frogging over them, won’t ruin their solo.  Staples Center is located at 1111 S. Figueroa Street in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.cirquedusoleil.com
