Unless your last name is Broad, Geffen or one of the unnamed Tomb Raiders that the Getty employed, chances are the only art you have on your walls are framed reproductions of Starry Night or French liquor ads. Two upcoming exhibitions and art shows may be able to change all that. (If not, they're also great places to network.)

First, we have the Los Angeles Antiques Show Preview Party benefitting P.S. Arts. Such hosts as Diane Keaton and Ed Ruscha will kick off this four-day exhibition showcasing 65 top antique and fine art dealers from all over the world.

Priced nominally at $150 for a single ticket to the Preview Party, not only will you get to see some phenomenal art, but the money (all but $50 tax deductible) goes to restore arts education programs to public elementary and middle schools in disadvantaged areas. With furniture, objects, paintings and decorative arts from antiquity through now on display, it's a great foray into the world of art collecting and renting a tuxedo.

Incognito combines the thrill of a vernisage with an art history class: over 100 artists – from Barbara Kruger to Ed Ruscha and Gary Basemen – have provided original 8-inch by 10-inch works for $250 each. Correct. You could conceivably own an Ed Ruscha for $250.

Of course there's a catch – and it's that one art history class prepared you for. Anyone having taken an art history class knows of the “Slide Test,” in which slides of a work are projected, and it's your job to write in your bluebook, based on what you know of the artists you studied this semester, who's the painter.

It was preparing you for this: all works of Incognito are signed on the back, and only after purchase are the artists' identities revealed. With tickets starting at $100 for entrance to this festive reception where one could purchase a Yoko Ono for $250, it's the ideal appetizer into art collecting: thrilling, anxiety provoking, but ultimately, fulfilling.
