Photographer Roberto Chile: Afrodescendientes
Afrodescendientes was originally mounted in Madrid’s Casa de America by celebrated Cuban photographer and documentarian Roberto Chile. It explores the African presence in Cuba through stunning photographs of everyday life in Guanabacoa, Cuba, a township in Eastern Havana and the first African Cabildo - an ethnic mutual aid society formed by freed Africans that allowed the continuation of many African traditions, religions, and artistic practices. The photographs in this visual journey are not only exemplary, but illustrate the sublime beauty of certain aspects of Afro-Cuban culture while inviting you into the emotional intimacy of daily life.
