Jose Antonio Hechavarria & Yahima Gonzales: Made in Havana
Yaima Gonzalez Cabrera attended the University of Havana. While attending the university, she stumbled upon Cuban artist Jose Antonio Hechevarria, whom she married in 2010 at an art event in Camaguey. While frequenting Jose's studio, she would observe his techniques and try to imitate him using watercolors. She moved from this medium to acrylics in small and large formats, but because of the lack of material in Cuba she has also taken to painting bottles as another method of expression. Hechavarria's work recalls Maurice Ravel's classic, "Bolero," that at crescendo it continues in a similar melodic pattern but only with some subtle changes. His art is eclectic, yet similar in many ways to the Cuban vision. Yaima's women act hidden in between theatre curtains. Pretending to be from worlds of a total tropical exoticism.
