- Nathan Ota and Yumiko Kayukawa

In Gallery I: Nathan Ota "An Unforeseen Homecoming." In Gallery II: Yumiko Kayukawa "49 Days."
Artist Reception: Friday, Sept. 3; 8-11 PM
Print Release & Signing: Friday, Sept. 3; 7-8 PM
Nathan Ota "An Unforeseen Homecoming": In "An Unforeseen Homecoming," Ota's first solo show at La Luz de Jesus, the artist sets out on an expedition which lands him in the unlikeliest destination - the world inside the artist's own studio.
Yumiko Kayukawa "49 Days": The paintings in Yumiko Kayukawa’s "49 Days" all carry a feeling of existing between life and death, and in these pieces, images of food and chopsticks can pertain to either. One of Yumiko’s great passions is eating, which she views as the symbolic opposite of death.

- The Material

This band of SoCal locals made a big impression on me a few months ago when I caught them opening for Every Avenue and There for Tomorrow and have been on my radar ever since. I had never heard of the melodic emo-pop act prior to the show, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a local support act that looked and sounded like they could be a headliner already.

Frontwoman Colleen D’Agostino has the vocal skills and stage presence to put the other similarly styled singers in her genre to shame, and the rest of her band likewise bring the rock just as hard. Suffice to say, that whole “look and sound like headliners” thing probably isn’t too far away from being an actuality for this band.

What sets Turner apart from the countless other punk acts attempting to do the same is that he’ll expertly deliver all of that on stage by himself, armed only with an acoustic guitar and possibly a harmonica. The singer-songwriter can effortlessly deliver emotive and heartfelt folk jams that still have the biting precision and do-it-yourself ethic of punk’s forefathers, making him a do-not-miss act for fans on either end of the spectrum.

- Not Only Time: Zhang Peili and Zhu Jia

Opening reception: Thursday, September 16 | 6–9 pm. Coming out of a generation that witnessed the ramifications of the Cultural Revolution, the Tiananmen Massacre and the landmark 1989 China/Avant-Garde exhibition and its subsequent closing by state authorities, Hangzhou-based artist Zhang Peili and Beijing-based artist Zhu Jia have used the medium of video and photography since the early 1990s to navigate the sea of changes in contemporary China. Although both earned degrees in oil painting, the radical departure between their training and practice and their consistent use of video as a medium for provocation, reflection and resonance becomes the impetus for this two-person exhibition. Their bodies of work begin with a position that poignantly challenges social mores, rampant development, authoritative politics and cultural values, and expand into more universal themes of the individual, time, and the loss of innocence and idealism. Zhang and Zhu present new works for REDCAT exhibited alongside past work, providing a focused, parallel examination of their respective practices. The exhibition is the first presentation of both artists’ work in Los Angeles.
