- Miss Derringer

Despite my unashamed love for all things punk rock, girl-fronted and western-themed separately, a band that combined all three simultaneously was not something I ever intended to have in heavy rotation on my iPod. With a southern charm you'd swear was being sung out by a bunch of Nashville natives, these L.A. natives can tackle dark and gritty subject matter and have you singing along the whole way. Think … if Social Distortion was fronted by the fairer gender, didn't just put out the same album every two to eight years and weren't old as dirt. You really wouldn't have much left of the original, I suppose, but what was left would be awesome … and it would be Miss Derringer. - Brien Overly

- Eyedea & Abilities

It just doesn't get much better than having one of the best lyricist MCs and one of the best DJs in modern hip-hop playing a show in one of Los Angeles' best hipster-friendly seedy venues. Eyedea's voice-of-the-streets approach to rapping, backed by Abilities' mix of atmospheric beats, and low-fi garage rock instrumentation and the occasional classical samplings, make for an eclectic and dynamic mix. At times dark, brooding and feeling like the soundtrack to a drug bender, at times bright and sparkling in its production, the one constant of Eyedea & Abilities' music is that it's always real to the core. Equal parts both grimy and sophisticated, the indie-hip-hop duo have no pretension when it comes to presenting their view of reality, unlike the rap that TV and radio stations would have you buy into. But hey, thought-provoking music isn't for everyone, I guess. - Brien Overly

- Motion City Soundtrack/This Providence

Try as I might, being that it's my job and all, I've found it's really hard to say anything bad about Motion City Soundtrack. Like, really hard. Not for fear of what kind of response doing so will garner or anything, because let's be real, not like that has ever stopped me before. You just can't hate these guys. Even on the millionth time of hearing "The Future Freaks Me Out" or "Everything is Alright," I can't help but want to sing along. Just because it's impossible not to smile while listening to the Minneapolis natives or while watching them play live doesn't mean they don't also have the lyrical substance to back it all up. Also, My Dinosaur Life is possibly the best album name ever. - Brien Overly
