Doves
The Wiltern
3790 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles map
Time: 8:00 pm
Cost: $29.50 advance; $35 at the door
I wish I had an accurate gauge for Doves’ success back in the U.K., because I’m not sure if they ever quite got due respect here in the States. Their MySpace only features one-minute clips of their songs, which is usually code for, “We’re a big deal. We (our label) don’t give away anything for free. This will inspire you to buy the album.” Which is fine in theory if your demographic is the adult contemporary crowd that hasn’t taken to the ’Space yet and actually buys hard copies of albums, but … that would defeat the purpose of putting. Them. On. The. MySpace. Regardless, I think my intent was originally to say I still have some fondness for Doves in my heart. Or something. - Brian Overly

Kevin Devine
Troubadour
9081 Santa Monica, West Hollywood map
Time: Check website for times
Cost: Check website for prices
Kevin Devine: The single man who wrote the album Brand New should have written. The Brooklyn native singer-songwriter employs precious few instruments for maximum emotive impact in each of his songs, told with a lyrical intelligence that doesn’t shy away from dishing out real talk either. With his signature shaky-voiced vulnerability, Devine can make even the biggest venues feel small and intimate. Although, having him actually play a small and intimate venue like the Troubadour takes things to a whole new level in terms of how much of an experience he’ll give you. - Brien Overly
