When you’re an in-demand session musician and producer like T Bone Burnett, you tend to have a pretty impressive address book. Burnett shows with an all-star line-up here that he’s not afraid to use it. With the Participant Foundation (an organization that works to support music education in public schools) being the recipient of the proceeds of this benefit album, the stars didn’t hesitate to come out and play when Burnett called.

Elton John and Leon Russell were on tour together at the time, and here they rip through a version of “Monkey Suit,” while Gregg Allman re-imagines his classic “Midnight Rider” as a bluegrass/swamp rock mash-up. Much of the album has a very organic feel to it; Ralph Stanley presents a stellar take on “Lift Him Up That’s All,” Jeff Bridges is joined by Burnett and Elvis Costello for a reprise of his Crazy Heart standout “Fallin’ & Flyin’,” and John Mellencamp rounds out the earthy trifecta with the album’s most rocking number, “Troubled Land.” The Secret Sisters, Yim Yames, Neko Case, the Punch Brothers and Karen Elson also perform.

T Bone Burnett Presents: The Speaking Clock Revue Live From the Beacon Theatre is currently available.
