USC Marks 100th Anniversary of World-Famous Nickname

February 24th is the 100th anniversary of the University of Southern California's world famous nickname - Trojans. On February 24th, 1912, Los Angeles Times sports editor Owen W. Bird referred to the track team as "Trojans" because of the baseball team's fighting spirit against more well-equipped and more established teams. After several years of different monikers, the university's officials and administrators were finally satisfied and delighted to take on this name, which eventually turned into a hundred years of a great legacy.
