The first of five installments by French creator Hub, Okko is the story of Tikku, a young fisherman whose sister is kidnapped by pirates. He teams up with a band of demon hunters led by the eponymous hero, a ronin. Also joining them are an enigmatic, masked giant and a sake-loving monk.

The story is packed with more imagination in one page than many whole graphic novels can muster. Hub’s illustrations are absolutely stunning, their lush detail densely packed into every page.

Hub creates a world that resembles feudal Japan but imbues it with magic and alternate reality technology, including giant battle puppets controlled from within by a puppeteer.

Grade: A

Okko: The Cycle of Water is currently available.
