Steel Magnolias

Written after the death of his sister, Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias” was Harling’s way to work through his grief. Using characters from his own life, “Steel Magnolias” is filled with humor and heartbreak, telling the tale of the ladies of Louisiana’s Chinquapin Parish. Director R. Benito Cardenas leads an all-Knightsbridge Company member production of this popular story updated to be relevant for today’s audience. Benito is assisted by Vance Roi Reyes, with set and lighting design by KBT’s Artistic Director and Producer Joseph Stachura.

Every week the ladies gather at Truvy’s (Karyn O’Bryant) hair salon for new hairstyles, the latest gossip and a hearty dose of friendship. Through the years we see the joys and sorrows. We meet the ladies during the pre-wedding preparations for Shelby (Shaina Vorspan) and her mother M’Lynn (Elizabeth Yocam). But the quiet of the day is marred by shotgun blasts as M’Lynn’s husband tries to keep the trees free of birds that might attack the wedding guests – and instead only upsets Ouiser Boudreaux (Jill Gehrke), who has been in a bad mood for 20 years, and her precious, hairless dog. Clairee (Marti Hale) is always there to poke friendly jabs at Ouiser, while the new girl Annelle (Kate McCoy), who may or may not be married, struggles to keep up. These delicate but strong “Steel Magnolias” make us laugh and cry as the realities of their lives unfold.
