Remembering Marilyn Monroe
Tonight’s program combines three ways of regarding Monroe. They begin with a selection from the Archive’s vast Hearst-Metrotone News collection of newsreel clips and out-takes featuring a candid Monroe, followed by Terry Sanders’ documentary, The Legend of Marilyn Monroe (1966), arguably the first documentary following the star’s demise to combine in-depth research, testimonials from both celebrities and lifelong acquaintances. Sander’s early, penetrating analysis opened up thoughtful questions both about Monroe’s life and the precarious nature of celebrity. Tonight’s event also includes author Susan Bernard, on hand to sign copies of her book, Marilyn: Intimate Exposures, a collection of photos showcasing the work of the author’s father Bruno Bernard, featuring many never before published images. A discussion with Sanders and Bernard will follow the screening.
