The Like / The Young Veins
And what better way to bring that earlier stated theme full circle, than with a band containing former members of Panic at the Disco. Now, I’ve admittedly probably given that band more than their fair share of flack, but rather than dwell on the past, I’m going to focus on how glad I am that two of them have gone on to much better things. I really can’t hate on this new project Ryan Ross and Jon Walker have been working on. It’s everything you would expect from retro-inspired garage indie: straightforward, low-fi and ever so slightly elitist, but charmingly so. Speaking of retro-inspired indie, the Like masterfully bring the classic ’60s style sing-along anthems into Silver Lake-chic modernity. Now, how four indie scenester girls from L.A. have more soul than half of the current Motown artist roster combined remains a mystery, but that’s an investigative article for another day. - Brien Overly
