Stray Dog @ Aero
Theatre
Japanese director Akira Kurosawa was a film icon.
Without him, geeks would never be able to proudly say that the force
was with them always. Kurosawa's film “The Hidden Fortress”
was an inspiration for director George Lucas' Star Wars. In the month
of January the Aero Theatre chronicles the man's cinematic life
showcasing some of his greatest work. First up, is the crime drama
Stray Dog. Starring legendary actor Toshiro Mifune (the two men would
work on many other projects) the film chronicles a young cop whose gun
is stolen from him on a bus. He will stop at nothing to find it in
order to not face the shame from his fellow peers and to himself. Aero
Theatre is located at 1328 Montana Avenue at 14th St. in Santa Monica.

Zach Galifianakis @
Largo
Beards are really funny. Comedian Zach Galifianakis
sports one of the gnarliest beards in all of comedy, quite possibly of
all time. Its not hyperbole but simply pure fact. And sure you can just
show up at Largo on a Friday and just stare it but that wouldn't serve
much purpose because guess what, Galifianakis is one of the funniest
men in America. If you're lucky he might scream at you but don't fret
you'll be laughing during it. Largo is located at 432 North Fairfax
Ave. in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.largo-la.com.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Golden State Warriors @ Staples Center
With rumors swirling around the potential pickup of
Chris Webber who was last seen playing for the Philadelphia 76ers
abound, one wonders how the former Sacramento King would look like in a
Lakers jersey considering the fact the Lakers and the Kings help a long
standing rival which was the eye for many NBA fans in this very early
decade. Nonetheless the Lakers will have a tough time (C-Web or no
C-Web) against the Golden State Warrior who look more defense oriented
what with the tough minded philosophy planted by Warriors head coach
Don Nelson. Staples Center is located at 1111 South Figueroa St.. For
more information visit www.lakers.com.

Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton @ El Rey Theatre
Knives Don't Have Your Back, the recently released
solo work from Metric front woman Emily Haines was a drastic departure
from that dance noise that she created with the Toronto based group.
The change will also occur live as she won't be a whirling dervish but
rather sitting down comfortably with one of her best friends, the
piano. It's January, it’s somber music and it's in a nice
theatre. Enjoy the warmth. Accompanying her on tour will be The Soft
Skeleton, the same plethora of player that helped her with the solo
album. El Rey Theatre is located at 5515 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles.
