WHAT'S HAPPENING IN LOS ANGELES

Thursday, Feb. 2

EXHIBIT: DIMINISHED RETURNS/INNOCENT EYES
@ David Kordansky Gallery

After winning an MTV-sponsored contest to direct a music video for the metal band Korn in 2002, Sean Dack’s five minutes of fame were presumed to be over, leaving him to become yet another member of the unshaven ranks of Williamsburg. Four years later, that is hardly the case. Since his directorial stint, Dack has exhibited video installations and photographs in Paris, Frankfurt, London, Reykjavik and his hometown of New York. Now, the boyishly good-looking artist is bringing his stark, haunting images to Los Angeles for his first L.A. solo show. The gallery is located at 510 Bernard St., Los Angeles. For more info, visit www.davidkordanskygallery.com.

MUSIC: BLEED THE DREAM
@Chain Reaction
Screamy, raw, gritty and edgy, Bleed the Dream is the embodiment of uninhibited onstage intensity. From singer Brandon Thomas’ tortured crooning and aneurism-inducing screeching to the evocatively intricate while still big and epic guitar work of Dave Aguilera, the Bleed members show why they deserve all the hype they’ve gotten over the last year. It’s hard to say what will kill you first at this show – be it a concussive blow to the back of your head from a crowd surfer or asphyxiation because of teeny-tiny Chain’s ventilation system (or lack thereof) – but at least you’ll die rocking harder than any other comparable band could ever say they rocked you. Chain Reaction is located a 1652 W. Lincoln Ave. Anaheim, 92801. For more info, visit www.allages.com.

Saturday, Feb. 4

EXHIBIT: VINTAGE FASHION EXPO
@ Santa Monica Civic Auditorium
Whether you are costuming the latest indie corset drama, or just looking for some cool old jewelry to jazz up your wardrobe, this enormous event -- billed as the largest of its kind in the country -- offers a cornucopia of choices for the savvy shopper. The dozens of vendors come from throughout California, many saving up their hottest items for these big shows. The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium is located at 1855 Main St., Santa Monica. For more info, visit www.vintageexpo.com.

Sunday, Feb. 5

EVENT: CHINESE NEW YEAR
@ Santa Monica Civic Auditorium

There will be no emceeing by Dick Clark or Ryan Seacrest, but there will be festivities and a parade. Chinatown's two-day festival celebrating the Year of the Dog, includes food, games, cultural entertainment, live music, crafts and the Golden Dragon Parade. Two dozen floats, multiple marching bands and elbow-elbow-wrist-wrist wavers will wind from the Chinese American Museum to Ord Street, but there's only one Miss L.A. Chinatown Queen! Still not enough? For reasons that remain unclear, a classic car show and an "Import Car Show Off" also figure into the weekend. The Chinese New Year Celebration is located at the northern end of Downtown, where Broadway meets Sunset Blvd. For more info, visit www.lagoldendragonparade.com.

Monday, Feb. 6

MUSIC: COLDPLAY
@Arrowhead Pond

Assuming The 40 Year-Old Virgin is one of the gospels of life, maybe listening to Coldplay really does mean you’re gay. But hey, if that’s the case, we’re all a little gay, right? Let’s not lie to ourselves here, people.
If everyone put their scenester cred aside for just a minute, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who wasn’t at least willing to admit, "ok, I love ‘The Scientist.’" Go on, try and say you don’t love that song too. Liar. The Arrowhead pond is located at 2695 E. Katella Ave., Anaheim 92806. For more info, visit www.arrowheadpond.com.

Tuesday, Feb. 7

THEATER : BOSTON MARRIAGE
@ Geffen Playhouse

After successful runs in New York and London, the Pulitzer Prize-winning David Mamet satire Boston Marriage arrives in Los Angeles. Although the play does take place in Beantown, the title is a reference to the 19th-century euphemism for a long-term relationship between two unmarried women living together without any male support.Running with themes of repressed desire, rigid societal convention and class tensions, Boston Marriage looks at same-sex relationships with sapphic—er, satiric—wit. The Geffen Playhouse is located at 10886 Le Conte Ave. Los Angeles, 90024. For more info, visit www.geffenplayhouse.com.

Wednesday, Feb. 8

EXHIBIT: SONIC SCENERY
@ Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum rocks the Stone Age by inviting 10 diverse musicians and composers to create original exhibition soundtracks. Designed to explore the ways in which exhibits can be experienced, "Sonic Scenery" uses music to enhance visitors' perceptions and understandings of the natural world. Inviting avant-garde musicians, composers and bands to compose music specifically for the Museum's main-level galleries, "Sonic Scenery" integrates sound and vision in a way we've never seen (or heard) before. The Natural History Museum is located at 900 Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles, 90007. For more info, visit www.nhm.org.
