SUICIDE MACHINES @ The Troubadour
Pulling licks and tricks from melodic pop and ska, these
guys aren't as new as they appear: They've been at it for 14 years. So
what's new here? On their latest release the band moves seamlessly from
brutal hardcore to bouncy ska to frenetic punk rock while tackling
subjects such as poor young voter turn-out and youth apathy in the wake
of the 2004 presidential election. The Troubadour is located at 9081
Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood. For more info, visit www.troubadour.com.

IT’S ALIVE @ The
Academy Gallery
If you love the cuddly, creepy or just plain creative characters
in films like Star Wars , Beetlejuice or Spider-Man 2 , then you'll definitely appreciate – and be entertained
by – a brand new exhibition at the Academy Gallery.Entitled
“It's Alive,” the exhibition serves to shine light upon the
various advances in animatronics in film over the years. The Academy is
located at 8949 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills. For more information,
visit www.oscars.org.

KROQ Weenie Roast @ Verizon Wireless
Amphitheatre
How long has it been since
the Red Hot Chili Peppers played a big L.A. show? It’s been a
while, hasn’t it? If ever there was a way to make a grand
entrance back into the public consciousness though, it would indeed be
with the biggest radio concert out there that doesn’t feature 50
Cent on the lineup. One thing to KROQ’s credit is that they
always know how to pull a headliner to make the $60-plus ticket price
worthwhile with this year being no different. Other performers include:
AFI, Dashboard Confessional, Panic! at the Disco, Taking Back Sunday,
Angels and Airwaves, Rob Zombie, H.I.M., Matisyahu and more... For more
info, visit www.kroq.com.

MEET THE GRUNION @ Cabrillo Beach
What better excuse could you think of to sit on
Southern California’s sandy shore at night with some friends than
to be at a “grunion run?” With excuses like this no wonder
many people think that grunion runs are some kind of “snipe
hunt” or our own version of the “submarine races!”
But it does happen, as probably millions of people have witnessed,
these small fish (to 7.5”) wash themselves up on the beach 3-4
nights after the new and full moon (syzygy tide conditions) through
August. Meeting point 3720 Stephen White Dr., San Pedro 90731. For more
info, visit www.cabrilloaq.org.

ARMONDO SHOW @ Improv Olympic West
Seasoned Improv Olympic veterans each sprinkle their own
brand of off-the-wall spontaneity into this improvised show. Beginning
with a single audience suggestion, a guest star (often a celebrated
comedian, actor or writer) spins a series of off-the-cuff monologues
that inspire improvised scenes from the cast, that in turn inspire
additional monologues. Sound chaotic? Doesn't matter. Even if you
aren't sure where they're going next, you'll enjoy the journey the
talented company takes you on. Improv Olympic West is located at 6636
Hollywood Blvd.,Los Angeles. For more info, visit www.iowest.com.

RISE AGAINST @ The Troubadour
By far one of the hardest working and hardest rocking bands in
punk these days, Rise Against earned all the mainstream success it got
with its last album, Siren Song of the
Counter Culture, and at the same it
wasn’t nearly as much as it deserved.
Frontman Tim McIlrath is a true artist when it
comes to conveying his desired emotion vocally, regardless of whether
it’s to a fast or slow beat. The band will have you sweating,
jumping and fist-pumping until you can’t do it anymore, and after
seeing them live, you’ll agree that you wouldn’t have it
any other way. The Troubadour is located at 9081 Santa Monica
Blvd, Hollywood. For more info, visit www.troubadour.com

EPOXIES @ The Knitting Factory
Since Tsunami Bomb broke up not so long ago (Such a
bummer. Seriously!), there’s been a bit of a void in the
“queen of punk rock” position after Agent M’s
untimely departure. Since the Distillers aren’t doing a whole lot
right now, it looks like the Epoxies are stepping up to the plate.
Frontwoman Roxy Epoxy’s stylized monotone is definitely not like
any of the other member of the fairer gender club to grace punk rock in
the last few years and her band’s synth-y backing adds a much
more fun dimension to their sometimes out there stage persona, with
both equating to the Epoxies being a band worth giving a shot.
The Knitting Factory is located at 7021 Hollywood Blvd.,
Hollywood. For more info, visit www.knittingfactory.com.
