VOTE
FOR AS I LAY DYING

VOTE FOR AS I LAY DYING AT YAHOO MUSIC IN LAUNCH'S WHO'S NEXT
Strengthened
by the road, creatively on fire, and with their lineup both solidified
and contributing equally to the songwriting process, As I Lay Dying
entered Big Fish Studios in Encinitas, California at the beginning of
January. The quintet sequestered themselves until spring and emerged
with their leanest, meanest, and most focused effort yet, Shadows
Are Security.
With another massive tour schedule ahead of them to support Shadows
And Security, including one of the headliner slots on the second
stage of Ozzfest 2005, As I Lay Dying will have ample opportunities
to bring the love, the pain and the noise to audiences worldwide.

'MEDAL
OF HONOR RAG'
Ongoing through July 17 @ Egyptian Arena Theatre
The current production at the Egyptian
Arena
Theatre, playwright Tom Coles Medal of Honor Rag,
excels in its gradual build-up of tension between a mental ward therapist
and his Vietnam vet patient. The patient is D.J. Jackson and, as played
by veteran rapper/actor Heavy D, he is a powerhouse of both strength
and inner torment a sensitive and tortured soul who can become
a raging beast if provoked.
Based on a true story, D.J. Jackson was on a tank crew in Nam and killed
some 20 Vietcong during an ambush in which all the other members of
his crew were killed. Suffering from survivors guilt, Jackson
returns home to be a recluse, until he is awarded the Congressional
Medal of Honor an event which exacerbates his sense of guilt,
and precipitates him into a mental ward. In the ward, he rejects treatment
until his therapist shares secrets about his own past that allow Jackson
to drop his defenses and begin to reveal the reasons for his pain and
guilt.
Egyptian Arena Theatre is located at 1625 N. Las Palmas Ave., in Hollywood. Show times: Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m. Price: $30. Tickets are available at www.heavyd.org or by calling The HerShe Group at (323) 650-3100..
LIVE
MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: JOAN OSBORNE
July 1 @ The Roxy
Even though she hasnt put out a record in a few years, Joan Osborne
is still one of the most talented singer-songwriters in the music scene
today. With a rapier tongue and an ear for melodies that are both catchy
and push the limits of pop music, Osborne is a breath of fresh air to
those who enjoy intelligent female voices.
Though the girl-with-a-guitar movement peaked in the 90s, Osborne
is not just a flash in the pan. Her effect can be felt throughout the
modern rock scene, though perhaps not in the most obvious ways. This
is a great opportunity to see her in a small venue, where you can get
up close and personal and ask her, What if God WAS one of us?
The
Roxy is located at 9009 W. Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood. For more
info, go to www.theroxyonsunset.com.
THE
SHINING @ THE RIALTO
Heeeeeeeerrreees Johnny!
No, thats not a written imitation of the late Mr. Carson entering
the stage on The Tonight Show, but rather the infamous,
creepy phrase uttered by a deranged Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubricks
1980 horror-tinged thriller, The Shining.
As part
of its Midnight Madness series, the Rialto will screen Kubricks
The Shining at midnight on Saturday, July 2. For more information or
for details about upcoming screenings, visit www.landmarktheatres.com.
DODGERS
VS. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
Sunday, July 3 @ Dodger Stadium
Going to a ball game is always fun for everyone involved, even those
who can't take watching sports on TV. The crowd, the atmosphere, the
Dodger Dogs, it's an experience that always gets filed away in the good
memories drawer afterwards. Bring your dad and you mitt for any stray
fly balls, and you're good to go. Watch as the Dodgers take on the Arizona
Diamondbacks on Sunday, July 3 at Dodger Stadium.
For more information,

THE
LOS ANGELES ZOO & BOTANICAL GARDENS
Remember when you were a kid and your parents took you to the zoo, before
you had any concept of animals being imported from places you had never
even heard of? It was a much simpler time in life, when you could eat
an ice cream cone while watching hippopotami swimming and giraffes grazing.
Then one day, we all grew up and traded in ice cream, giraffes and hippopotami
for college, taxes and car insurance. What a bummer, huh?
Well,
its never too late to recapture those memorable childhood experiences
with a trip to the L.A. Zoo. Located in the northeast corner of Griffith
Park, the 113-acre zoo houses over 1,200 animals and sees more than
1.4 million visitors pass through its gates every year.So make it a
whole family trip, buy some ice cream, re-familiarize yourself with
the scent of animal excrement and remember what it was like to be 5
years old again for a day.
Hours:
Open daily from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and until 6 p.m. every day from July
1-Labor Day. Price: Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors age
62 and over, $5 for children ages 2-12 and free for children under 2.
For more information, visit www.lazoo.org.
ART
EXHIBITS: CARLOS GARAICOA
Ongoing
through July 17 @ MOCA Pacific Design Center
Carlos
Garaicoas exhibit at the Pacific Design Center is like wandering
through a
OK, imagine that a erudite, Asian-inspired friend of
yours threw a party in the Hollywood Hills. Its now 3 a.m. and
everyone but you has gone home or is passed out somewhere in the bushes.
Alone, in that self-pondering mental state you sometimes enter post-party,
the kind of depression that listening to club music alone on a Saturday
night inspires, you wander through the still-flickering rice lamps and
wonder if youre the only one that feels this way après-parties.
This is the work of Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa: Rice paper, steel,
electric wires and bulbs that, somehow, effectively evoke "an unsentimental
understanding of Cubas post-1960s politics and ideologies and
the role that modernist architecture played in that pursuit."
MOCA Pacific Design Center is located at 8687 Melrose Ave., in West
Hollywood, (310) 657-0800. Museum hours: Closed Mon., Tues. and Wed.
11 a.m.-5 p.m., Thurs. 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Fri. 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat. and
Sun. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information, visit www.moca.org
or www.pacificdesigncenter.com.
Price: Admission is free.
