LIVE MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: DEAD POETIC
July 14 @ the Whisky A Go-Go

About as hard rocking as emotional young’uns from Ohio can get (no, those other emo losers who left their hearts in Ohio while they were on Warped Tour this year don’t count), Dead Poetic is one of those rare powerfully epic bands that really makes you feel the music. And get this, singer Brandon Rike actually sings. Without whining. What a concept, huh? These guys just rock, plain and simple, without having to stretch themselves for the sole sake of having an image to fit into a genre or under some lame label umbrella. They are who they are, unashamedly, and make good solid rock while they’re at it.

Catch Dead Poetic when they play at the Whisky A Go-Go, located at 8901 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood. For more info, visit www.deadpoetic.com.

TRAINSPOTTING @ THE NUART

Before playing lighter (and, arguably, bad) roles in mainstream hits like the Star Wars prequels and Down With Love, Ewan McGregor took a surprising turn as Mark Renton, a morally bankrupt 20-something with a “sincere and truthful junk habit,” in the 1996 drug film Trainspotting.

Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, Mark is disillusioned by the trappings of the cookie-cutter “successful” life – the right career, a house, a family and all the washing machines, fancy cars, big televisions and everything else that supposedly goes along with it. He chooses to run with a gang of like-minded heroin junkies and depraved individuals in urban Edinburgh and lead a life more fulfilling… or so he thinks.

The Nuart Theatre is located at 11272 Santa Monica Blvd., in West Los Angeles. The film will be shown at midnight on July 15 as part of the Nuart's "Think Midnight" series. For tickets and additional information, call (310) 281-8223 or visit www.landmarktheatres.com.

DODGERS VS. GIANTS @ DODGER STADIUM

Going to a ball game is always fun for everyone involved, even those who can't take watching sports on TV. The crowd, the atmosphere, the Dodger Dogs, it's an experience that always gets filed away in the good memories drawer afterwards. Bring your dad and you mitt for any stray fly balls, and you're good to go. Watch as the Dodgers take on the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, July 16 at Dodger Stadium.

For more information,
visit www.dodgers.com.

Sunday, July 17

LIVE MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: ALKALINE TRIO
July 17 @ The Glass House

Following the footsteps of hardcore pop bands such as the new AFI, Alkaline Trio taps into a place in the music world that could very easily slip into the evil realm of Simple Plan-Good Charlotte land. But this band manages to pull it off, while remaining true to their black-wearing roots and not making eyeliner look like a fashion fad. Don’t get me wrong, they know how to rock, and they will rock you all night if you are brave enough to make it to the front. Make it to the front.

Catch Alkaline Trio when they play at the Glass House in Pomona, located at 200 W. Second Street, with Death By Stereo and former Campus Circle-featured band Rise Against. For more information,
visit www.alkalinetrio.com.

LIVE MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: BECK
July 19 @ Santa Barbara Bowl

If you don’t know by now, there is something wrong with you. Beck has long since captured the heart of anyone with an admiration for the unique and quirky, and has never depended on being the poster boy of any one genre to propel him to the top. His newest release, Guero, is a return to the mixture of trick tempos and half-sung lyrics that made him a household name in the mid-’90s.

Catch Beck when he plays with Le Tigre at the Santa Barbara Bowl, located at 1122 N. Milpas in Santa Barbara. For more information, visit www.beck.com.

Wednesday, July 20

RINGLING BROS. AND BARNUM & BAILEY CIRCUS
July 20-24 @ STAPLES Center

Everyone goes to the circus when they're a kid. It's just how it is, an integral part of early youth. You grew up deprived of one of the essential childhood experiences if you didn't. The self-proclaimed "Greatest Show On Earth" is coming through town again, so get your kid bro or your illegitimate children, drag them away from the X-Box for a day, and show them how you did it when you were a kid, way back in the day. Give them the "I walked in the snow..." spiel as well, just for effect.

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.ringling.com.
