'THE
BOOK OF LIZ' @ 2ND STAGE THEATRE
If youre
part of a writing duo called The Talent Family, it goes without saying
that youve probably popped out some good stuff.
Perhaps thats why The Blank Theatre Company chose to stage "The
Book of Liz," a play from the witty and slightly warped minds of
siblings Amy and David Sedaris, otherwise known as The Talent Family.
Amy, who writes the Comedy Central hit "Strangers with Candy"
and stars as Jerri Blank, and David, the bestselling author of such
novels as Me Talk Pretty One Day and Naked, collaborated on this offbeat,
fish-out-of-water tale of unique characters and some damn funny
one-liners.
2nd Stage Theatre is located at 6500 Santa Monica Blvd. (between Highland
and Vine at Wilcox), in Hollywood. Show times: Thu.-Sat. 8 p.m.; Sun.
2 p.m., 7 p.m. Price: $25. To purchase tickets, call (323) 661-9827
or visit www.theblank.com/mainstage.
LIVE
MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: BRANDI CARLILE
July
22 @ the Roxy
Authentic. That's the first word that springs to mind when you encounter
Brandi Carlile. From her rootsy bell-clear voice to the palpable emotion
that seeps through every song on her stunning debut album, everything
about this 23-year-old from rural Washington state is the real deal.
Think of a female Roy Orbison or Radiohead's Thom Yorke fronting a roots-rock
band and you're not far off. The contrast led Rolling Stone, which named
her one of their 10 Artists to Watch in 2005, to declare: "Carlile's
ethereal, melancholy ballads have a spare heartache that reflects her
love for old-school country
but she loves new-school mopers like
Radiohead and Jeff Buckley just as much". Indeed, those artists'
influence can be felt on the simple, acoustic strummers "Happy",
"Gone" and "Tragedy". Other musical stand-outs include
"Throw It All Away" and "Fall Apart Again".
The
Roxy is located at 9009 W. Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood. For tickets

CONCERTS AT AMOEBA: ANDREA ECHEVERRI
Sunday,
July 24 @ 2 p.m.
The lead singer of Aterciopelados will be playing songs from her self-titled
solo debut.
Echeverri branches off from the Grammy-winning Latin alternative-rock
duo, to deliver a lush, sensual collection inspired by her recent passage
into motherhood. The sometimes intoxicating and aggressive anthems of
her earlier works have given way to ethereal electronica and softly
rocking lullabies that show off the subtly powerful voice of this Colombian
vocalist. - SF Gate

BASQUIAT
@ MOCA
Dont let the pretentious name fool you. Basquiat, subject of the
Julian Schnabel film of the same name, began as a street artist living
in a cardboard box in New Yorks Thompkins Square Park. A perfect
fit for the artistic scene still evolving here in Los Angeles, Basquiat
became known for covering walls in SoHo and subway cars signing
his work "SAMO©" (for "same old shit")
with crowned icons of the urban, sports and music legends of the African-American
community.
A delicious sampler platter to Basquiats existence, the exhibition
also features the artist channeling Da Vinci, Pablo Picasso and Henri
Matisse, in showcasing his entire Daros Suite, a series of 32 drawings
seen for the first time in the United States. Thats right
not even your East Coast pals pretentious parents will be able
to one-up you here.
MOCA
Grand Avenue is located at 250 S. Grand Ave., in downtown Los Angeles.

LIVE
MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: ROBBERS ON HIGH STREET & BRENDAN BENSON
July 19 @ the
El Rey
Unlike
that girl who didnt call you back after that great night at the
bar last week, the Robbers are more than a one-night stand; they consistently
produce solid tunes and enjoyable sets.
Benson is the new indie golden boy. With guitar work thats a little
bit folk and a little rock n roll, he seems to incorporate
every influence since 1962 into his music.
Both of these bands are acts that you will hear a lot more about and
much more from in the coming years. Check them out at this awesome venue
before they start playing arenas.
Catch Robbers on High Street and Brendan Benson when they play at the
El Rey, located at 5515 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. For more information,
visit www.robbersonhighstreet.com
or www.brendanbenson.com.

Going
to a ball game is always fun for everyone involved, even those who can't
take watching sports on TV. The crowd, the atmosphere, the Dodger Dogs,
it's an experience that always gets filed away in the good memories
drawer afterwards. Bring your dad and you mitt for any stray fly balls,
and you're good to go. Watch as the Dodgers take on the Cincinatti Reds
on Saturday, July 16 at Dodger Stadium.
