LIVE MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: CKY
August 11 @ House of Blues Anaheim

Pennsylvania-based CKY emerged from the late ’90s wreckage of jock rock when singer/guitarist Deron Miller and drummer Jess Margera brought their demo to guitarist/vocalist Chad Ginsburg who, working as a producer, was eager to ditch the monotony of working with dead-end bands. After releasing their debut Volume 1 on Volcom, CKY teamed with Island Records in 2001 and released Infiltrate. Destroy. Rebuild, an album that struck a captivating balance between antagonistic rock bravado and warm, unassuming self-confidence – making you love it and fear it at the same time. The band’s follow-up, An Answer Can Be Found, strays from IDR’s provocative duality but succeeds with the sheer potency of its conviction.

Catch Cky when they play the House of Blues in Anaheim. For more info, visit www.HoB.com.

LIVE MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: HOWIE DAY
August 12 @ House of Blues Sunset

While the 23-year old songwriter from Bangor, Maine continues to explore the themes of love, regret and loss in his lyrics, his music takes on an additional dimension as he incorporates a 25-piece orchestra to "Numbness for Sound," "I'll Take You On," "Collide," and "She Says." Writing on piano for the first time on an album, Day adds a new element to "End of Our Days" and "Trouble in Here." "Going into the studio, I wanted to create a timeless record that will hold up 10 years down the road," says Day. "But really the biggest advantage was that I had enough time and the right people around me to help me fully realize the vision for this album."

After recording Australia in two and three song bursts over the course of a year, Day says it was refreshing to record Stop All The World Now all at once. "When I listen to my first record now, I can hear myself growing up in those songs; time stretching out," observes Day. "The new album is more like a current snapshot, and its not overexposed or blurry."

Stop All The World Now explores Day's experiences from the road as he toured for four years as a solo artist and opened for artists like Sting, Jack Johnson, Sheryl Crow and most recently, Tori Amos.

Catch Howie Day with Anna Nalick when they play the Troubadour on Friday, August 5. For more info, go to www.howiday.com.

DODGERS VS. METS @ DODGERS STADIUM

Going to a ball game is always fun for everyone involved, even those who can't take watching sports on TV. The crowd, the atmosphere, the Dodger Dogs, it's an experience that always gets filed away in the good memories drawer afterwards. Bring your dad and you mitt for any stray fly balls, and you're good to go.

Watch as the Dodgers take on the New York Metson Sunday, July 3 at Dodger Stadium. For more information, visit www.dodgers.com.

ANGELS VS. BLUE JAYS @ ANGEL STADIUM

Who remembers a time when it was just the "Anaheim Angels"? And now it's the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim"? What? Why? How? Is L.A. doing a subtle overtaking of OC?

Who cares? It's baseball! As long as they don't start calling it soccer, it's going to be fun no matter what. Watch as the Angels take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, August 15 at Angel Stadium.

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN WITH PENNY MARSHALL Q&A
Tuesday, August 16 @ ArcLight

If you’re a fan of summer, than there’s a decent chance you’re also a fan of baseball. And if you’re a fan of baseball, then you’re sure to remember a number of memorable lines from director Penny Marshall’s 1992 hit A League of Their Own.

The film achieved both critical and commercial success in the U.S., and also costars Hanks (who coincidentally starred in 1988’s Big, which was Marshall’s big-screen directorial debut), Jon Lovitz, David Strathairn and Penny’s brother Garry Marshall, who plays the wealthy owner of the All-American Girls Baseball League.

Both Penny Marshall and Petty will appear for a Q&A at Hollywood’s ArcLight on Aug. 16 following a screening of the film, which will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m.

ArcLight is located at 6360 W. Sunset Blvd. (between Vine and Ivar, with DeLongpre to the south), in Hollywood. For more information, visit www.arclightcinemas.com

LIVE MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: THE WHITE STRIPES
August 5 @ The Greek

Come on, it’s the White Stripes. C’mon! You know you want to go. Maybe just to satisfy a weird curiosity, or maybe you unashamedly love the band like no other, but you really want to go.

Granted, Jack and Meg are the elitist indie media darlings, and they do get a lot of hype no matter what they do, but as if you’re going to argue and say they’re not the foremost envelope-pushers of mainstream rock. As if you’re going to say their music isn’t catchy as hell on top of being progressive. And like you’ll even try to pretend you don’t sing along to "Blue Orchid" in your car, and that you don’t try, in ultimate vain, to match Jack’s falsetto as you pound on your steering wheel in time with Meg’s beats. Or maybe you already think they’re cool and don’t need any more convincing …

Catch the White Stripes when they play the Greek on Wednesday, August 17. For more info, go to www.whitestripes.com.
