What better way to bring together people of different cultures and simultaneously help out underprivileged and at-risk youths than by throwing a really big party, rocking out and maybe eating some funnel cake?
That’s the general idea behind Sunset Junction Street Fair – well, maybe it was initially. Behind the fun and games, the Junction’s Web site states the fair is grounded by a worthy goal: "Understanding and acceptance of cultural diversity, lifestyles and gender."

The biggest draw at the street fair is the array of well-known musicians scheduled to perform on three stages, from the currently thriving to those making a comeback. Sunset Junction managed to secure L.A.’s own Rilo Kiley as well as the retro New York Dolls. Alternative acts the Walkmen and Black Mountain, hot off a tour with Coldplay, are also set to play. Not to be outdone by the young rock bands, a crop of legendary soul acts, such as Chaka Khan and former members of the Supremes and the Temptations, will also be taking the stage. Departing from the musical theme, but also performing on stage, is the Suicide Girls burlesque troupe, the hot, punky chicks of

Sunset Junction Street Fair 2005 will take place Aug. 27, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. and Aug. 28, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Price: $10. The events will be located between 3600 and 4400 Sunset Blvd., in Silverlake. For more information, call (323) 661-7771 or visit

Rufio has long been one of the great underrated bands of pop-punk, far too often getting lumped in with the dime-a-dozen kids on major labels who will be back to serving fries at the drive-thru by the time you read this. Rufio, despite what many might think or say, is in it for the long haul, and is one of the surprising few bands with the longevity and musicianship to say so. Anyone who says otherwise just hasn’t seen the band perform live yet.
You’d probably expect something predictably whiny and stereotypically emo, but you’d be quite surprised to find out what a hard-rocking live show they put on. Go ahead and let them prove you wrong. Afterward we’ll pretend you loved them all along, deal?

With an all-star cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal and Sir Anthony Hopkins, Proof – which releases in theaters Sept. 16 – is based on the David Auburn play about a devoted daughter (Paltrow) who must come to terms with the death of her father (Hopkins). In this wonderfully multi-layered story, the deceased father in question was a brilliant mathematician plagued by extreme mental illness. His daughter, after searching through her father’s old notebooks in order to find out more about his life and intelligence, discovers that she may have inherited more than just her father’s genius.
Proof will be screened at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Hollywood’s ArcLight Cinemas as part of AFI’s ongoing "Directors Screenings." Following the special screening, there will be a Q&A discussion with Hopkins, as well as Proof director John Madden (who also directed Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love).

ArcLight Hollywood is located at 6360 W. Sunset Blvd., in Hollywood. For more information about this and other upcoming AFI at ArcLight events, call (323) 464-1478 or visit
