COMEDY: TINY HOSTAGES
@ Improv Olympic West

Though not as famous as the Groundlings or Second City, Improv Olympic West manages to hold its own in producing an eclectic mix of stand-up, improv and spoken word performances that's just as funny as the more prestigious competition, without the higher ticket prices. Audience suggestions are taken to create entirely improvised musicals, movies and commercials and occasionally celebrity guests take the stage. Friday nights feature an improv jam that allows audience members to get up and try their hand at being funny.

Improve Olympic West is located at 6366 Hollywood Blvd. For more info, call (323) 962-7560.

WHALES: A JOURNEY WITH GIANTS
@ Aquarium of the Pacific

Whale-watching season may be over in Southern California, but the Aquarium of the Pacific's new multimedia presentation takes visitors on a deep-sea adventure through the eyes of a blue whale.
"Whales: A Journey with Giants" tells the story of a blue whale and her calf migrating along the Southern California coast. The presentation in the Aquarium's Great Hall, where a life-size model of a blue whale and calf hang from the ceiling, provides projected images of SoCal wildlife. There are killer whales, Garibaldi fish, sea lions, lighting effects that simulate an oceanic atmostphere and a natural soundtrack of whale calls. Fortunately, the Aquarium doesn't use its sprinkler system for a full-on underwater sensation.

The Long Beach Aquarium is located at 100 aquarium Way, Long Beach. For more info, visit www.aquariumofpacifc.org

MUSIC: EVERY TIME I DIE
@ House of Blues Sunset

Every Time I Die doesn’t have any problem with conflict. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think the band thrives on it. Maybe, in all actuality, it really does. But that’s just fine with its members, it’s just fine with their fans and it’s exactly why their live show is so much more intense than that of other bands within the same genre. Every Time I Die’s previous album Hot Damn! is one of the most respected, albeit highly underrated, albums of any modern hardcore band on the scene today, and its latest album Gutter Phenomenon takes what the band does best to the next level. Catch the band now before like, everyone else catches on!

The House of Blues Sunset is located at 8430 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood For more info, visit www.hob.com

Monday, Sept. 26

MUSIC: STORY OF THE YEAR
@ Ventura Theater

It’s been a good long while since Story of the Year was on tour last, and since then, without so much as a "Hey, we’re still alive!" to its SoCal fans, the band has written, recorded and finished a whole new album. While the undying devotion you had for Story a year ago might have wavered over its months of absence, the new material from its upcoming album, In the Wake of Determination, promises to bring you right back in and remind you why you love the band.

The Ventura Theater is located at 26 S. Chestnut St., Ventura. For more info, visit www.venturatheater.com

EXHIBIT: SCENE OF THE CRIME
Ongoing @The Getty Center

Comprising approximately seventy photographs from the Getty Museum's permanent collection, this exhibition surveys the news photography of Arthur Fellig (American, born Austria, 1899–1968), who became known in the 1930s as Weegee the Famous. Weegee (after the Ouija board game) seemed to materialize wherever news was happening, covering all aspects of Manhattan nightlife and vividly documenting the police beat. Spanning two decades of Weegee's freelance career, the exhibition is introduced with pictures by pioneering Los Angeles news photographer George Watson and his nephew Coy Watson, Jr.

The Getty Center is located at 1200 Getty Center Drive in Los Angeles. The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more info, visit www.getty.edu

Wednesday, Sept. 28

FILM: PSYCHO
@ Arclight Cinemas

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 45 years since Anthony Perkins’ creepy Norman Bates first graced the silver screen. One of the most haunting and memorable movie villains of the 20th century, Bates – who, in the film, owns and operates an offbeat motel which, somehow, always has "12 rooms and 12 vacancies" – permanently entered the movie fan’s lexicon due to an understated presence and precise direction by Hitchcock himself.

The Sept. 28 screening begins promptly at 8 p.m. Tickets are $11 for general admission and $10 for AFI, ArcLight and Skirball members. ArcLight Cinemas is located at 6360 W. Sunset Blvd., in Los Angeles. For more information or to order tickets online, visit www.arclightcinemas.com.
