What’s Happening in Los Angeles

Thursday, Sept. 28
FINDING OUR FAMILIES, FINDING OURSELVES @ Museum of Tolerance
The Museum of Tolerance’s, “Finding Our Families, Finding Ourselves” looks at the lives of public figures such as Billy Crystal, Yankees Manager Joe Torre and Carlos Santana. Patrons will get an interactive genealogical history of each celebrity, including that of Maya Angelou, where visitors can take a virtual tour of Angelou’s grandmother’s general store. The exhibition also allows visitors to research their own history. Museum of Tolerance is located at 9786 W Pico Blvd. Los Angeles. For more info, visit www.museumoftolerance.com

Friday, Sept. 29
L.A. ANGELS OF ANAHEIM VS. OAKLAND A’S @ Angel Stadium
It’s been a rough season for the Angels. Last year, they were in the playoffs, but it doesn’t look so good for them this year. The Oakland A’s will roll into town this week for a series with the Angels. Playoffs or not, it’s still a great experience in the ballpark— chowing down on a hotdog and hopefully seeing the Angels lay a whopping on the A’s. Angel Stadium is located at 2000 Gene Autry Way in Anaheim. For more info, visit www.laangels.com

Saturday, Sept.  30
CASTING NATURE: MACHINE D'ARGENT @ Getty Center
The Machine d’ Argent is looked upon as a masterpiece of 18th-century silver. Made by goldsmith Francois-Thomas Germain, the piece shows the perfect combination of concept and composition. In this exhibition at the Getty Center, the still life sculpture will be put within the context of the many different types of artistic productions (paintings, objects and prints) done in France at that time.  The Getty Center is located at 1200 Getty Center Drive in Los Angeles.  For more info, visit www.getty.edu

Sunday, Oct. 1
CRUMB @ Aero Theatre
Embark on an adventure into one of the best documentaries of all time with an intimate look at one of the greatest artists of our time, cartoonist Robert Crumb. In the first feature length documentary by director Terry Zwigoff (Bad Santa), the film looks at the life of Crumb and the dysfunction that seemed to carry through his life as well as his two brothers. The Aero Theatre is located at 1328 Montana Avenue at 14th Street in Santa Monica. For more info, visit http: //www.egyptiantheatre.com/Aero/aeromastercalendar.htm

Monday, Oct. 2
YEAH YEAH YEAHS @ The Palladium
“Go Karen O Go, Go Karen O Go.” These words most likely will be heard from the thousands of fans who will be up to trot for the New York three piece. O, undoubtedly the finest front woman in rock today (sorry Gwen) will shake the crowd up in a frenzy with her spasmodic always-energetic stage presence. Also be on the lookout for whatever crazy number she’ll be wearing. Screamo artists The Blood Brothers open. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster. The Palladium is located at 6215 Sunset Blvd., in Hollywood. For more info, visit www.hollywoodpalladium.com

Tuesday, Oct. 3
MIXTAPE! @ Bigfoot Lodge
I love mixtapes. Perfect for the long road trip or for those long study sessions, just busting out that “English Test Mix Vol.1” for sittings studying Shakespeare and such. For mixtape! The perfect blend of noise rock, pop music, garage, twee, post-punk and just sheer dance pleasure is for all. Add in $4 “pink drinks” and $3 draft beer and it’s all goood. But sorry guys, its only for the ladies. Bigfoot Lodge is located at 3172 Los Feliz Blvd. in Los Angeles. For more info, visit www.bigfootlodge.com

Wednesday, Oct. 4
CAGEMATCH @ UCB Theatre
Cage matches are pretty scary. I’ve seen my share of WWE type matches, and these matches hurt. Brawling in a steel structure doesn’t always have to be punch combinations or body slams, but just side splitting hilarity. At the UCB Theatre, Cage Match, matches two teams, going head to head in an all out battle for comic supremacy. The audience determines who the winner is via a secret ballot and the victor of the previous match will face next week’s group of gladiators. Its kind of like Family Feud but funnier and no Richard Dawson. UCB Theatre is located at 5919 Franklin Ave in Hollywood. For more info, visit www.ucbtheatre.com
