WHAT'S HAPPENING IN LOS ANGELES

Thursday, Oct. 13

MUSIC: MINUS THE BEAR
@ Troubadour
The aspect of this band that is most memorable and noteworthy is its lack of fear. The band is never afraid to take that next step. It is a hardcore band that never falls into thick guitars. It is an emotionally driven band that at times has more in common with Death Cab for Cutie than Thursday, but somehow combines the best elements of both bands. The squealing guitars are always more treble than straight scream, but it still conveys a sense of urgency, as the vocals of Jake Snyder slip and slide across the musical landscape of every song.
Another quality that this band should be admired for is its ability to create a wall of sound usually not found in indie bands. Basically, its members will rock you until you fall over, and then pick you up and give you a glass of water. Give them a shot. The Troubadour is located at 9081 Santa Monica Blvd. For more info, visit www.minusthebear.com or www.troubadour.com

EVENT: QUEEN MARY SHIPWRECK
@ Queen Mary
The Queen Mary is rumored to be haunted—even paranormal researchers have claimed to see ghosts here. So imagine how spooky it is during Halloween season when the cruise liner has blood splashed on the walls, realistic-looking bodies hanging from nooses and skeletons stacked up everywhere. Passengers find themselves tiptoeing along the seven haunted mazes deep inside the bowels of the Queen Mary, ducking under spiderwebs and peering carefully through chain-link fences at deceased-looking bodies. Those brave enough to sleep here overnight can reserve "RIP" hotel package. The Queen Mary is located at 1126 Queens Hwy., Long Beach. For more info, visit www.queenmaryshipwreck.com.

EVENTS: SCREAMFEST
@ Universal City Walk
Don't be a Hallo-weenie. Ten days of horror movies is nothing to be scared of —or is it? Screamfest is devoted to the discovery of "new blood" in the horror genre. Case in point is the film debut of Cruel World, the fest's kickoff bloodbath starring Edward Furlong, Jaime Pressly and Andrew Keegan. The lineup also includes genre classics like Friday the 13, followed by a Q & A with producer/director Sean S. Cunningham. Other films with the intention to shock will also be shown. The festival also includes panels on finding success and more urgently, actors to populate a project. Universal City walk is located off of Universal Studios Blvd. For more info on the festival, visit www.screamfestla.com.

MUSIC: OPETH
@ House of Blues Sunset

Over the past decade, Opeth have evolved into one of the most distinct sounding bands in metal music and one of the most daring bands death metal has ever seen. The Swedish band, shattered the rigid constraints of the genre, most notably with their highly acclaimed 2001 album Blackwater Park. By combining the progressive side of death metal with a more midtempo, melodic, almost folk-based sounds, Blackwater Park set the template for a pair of experimental sequels. Opeth's music has always come off as a bit chilly, dazzling in the kind of technical expertise prog fans adore. See them live! The House of Blues Sunset is located at 8430 Sunset Blvd. For more info, visit www.opeth.com

Monday, Oct.17

BARS: ROCK AND ROLL KARAOKE
@ Big Foot Lodge

Bigfoot lodge is located at 3172 Los Feliz Blvd., Los Angeles. For more info, visit www.myspace.com/bigfootlodge.

FILM: HOLLYWOOD FILM FESTIVAL
@ Arclight Cinemas
The Hollywood Film Festival aims to discover emerging independent filmmakers. Each year the main competition accepts features, shorts and animated films, with up to 50 selected as finalists and screened at venues in Hollywood.
After making its debut in October 1997, the Hollywood Film Festival soon got the all-important local thumbs-up from the Hollywood Reporter and Variety. Don't be fooled by the intense branding perpetrated by the sponsors at Hollywood Video - this is a serious festival, not just a marketing exercise. The conference is a hectic scramble for access to the industry buyers and the various festival sub-sections all put on a wide range of screenings.

Screenings of all the film will be located at the Arclight Cinemas at 6360 Sunset Blvd. For more info, visit www.hollywoodawards.com

HALLOWEEN: MR BONES PUMPKIN PATCH
@ Dohoney Drive, Los Angeles
On Wilshire Boulevard, less than a mile away Rodeo Drive, there is a small vacant lot which transforms into "Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch" each October. The lot is fenced in and covered with hay, filled with pumpkins, pony rides, a "Pumpkin Bounce," and a petting zoo. Visitors are charged $3.00 to enter and enjoy what is, for all intents and purposes, a Hollywood movie set complete with all of the things that don't seem so out of place in a true rural Pumpkin Patch, but nestled between the multi-million dollar high-rise apartments of Westwood, they seem wildly out of place: goats, hay, pregnant pigs, and caramel apples. These pumpkin patches pepper the neighborhoods of this city, but this particular patch is one of the most elaborate. Closer to a miniature county fair, "Mr. Bones" goes to great lengths to sell pumpkins. but its all in good fun.
Mr Bones Pumpkin Patch is located at 702 N. Doheny Drive. For more info, visit www.mrbonespumpkinpatch.com.
