What’s Happening in Los Angeles

Friday, Dec. 1
The Sound of Music @ Egyptian Theatre
The hills surrounding Los Angeles will definitely be alive for The Sound of Music, the classic film starring Julie Andrews. The film, directed by Robert Wise won the Oscar for Best Picture and why not, what with the film’s magnificent shots of the Austrian Alps and the impeccable story of The Von Trapp Family Singers. Tonight’s screening will give every “doe a deer, a female deer” fan a good smile in the face, as the film will be showcased in 70mm. Egyptian Theatre is located at 6712 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood. For more information visit www.egyptiantheatre.com.

Saturday, Dec. 2
Match Game @ UCB Theatre
The classic fill in the blank game, which we loved, well maybe your parents loved way back when, has now returned. This time not in the safety of our television screens but rather through the comedic geniuses that dwell within the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles. Contestants picked straight out of the audience (hey it could be you!) vie for cash prizes all the while trying to contain the laughter whittling inside their stomachs. Guest comedian panelists include Paul F. Tompkins, Maria Bamford and Rachael Harris. UCB Theatre is located at 5919 Franklin Avenue in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.ucbtheatre.com/la.

Sunday, Dec. 3
Candy Cane Lane Holiday Lights @ Candy Cane Lane Neighborhood
Going back 50 years, the residents of Woodland Hills have made Candy Cane Lane a Christmas tradition. The streets, which make up Candy Cane Lane, are adorned with lights, figures, and a plethora of fake snow. It’s a feast for the eyes as visitors from all over bask in the pageantry. And yes… you’re sure to see Santa, a few reindeer and the jolly Mr. Snowman but as our brains have become fixated within the fabric of the mainstream you’ll see your favorite nativity scene paired up with the good ole’ Sponge Bob Squarepants.   Candy Cane Lane Neighborhood is located at Lubao Avenue and Oxnard Street in Woodland Hills. For more information please call 818-347-4737.

Monday, Dec. 4
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Indiana Pacers @ Staples Center
The Los Angeles Lakers are sitting nice and pretty atop the Pacific Division of the Western Conference with a record of 9-4. Sure, most of the games have been at home (all under the new lights out motif) but you still can’t deny the proven success of the triangle offense and the phenomenon that is Kobe Bryant. The Lakers do have a tough task ahead of them, as they will match up with an Eastern conference contender, the Indiana Pacers on Monday night. Staples Center is located at 1111 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles. For more information visit www.lakers.com

Tuesday, Dec. 5
Descanso Gardens Holiday Festival @ Descanso Gardens
You can’t say Christmas without saying poinsettia. For the Descanso Gardens Holiday Festivals, poinsettias will be out in full display at the nine-day festival. At the garden’s Boddy House, a plethora of poinsettias will be out in lavish display, in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes. While there you can also take part in the Christmas tree display, holiday marketplace and a meet and greet with Santa Claus and his elves. Descanso Gardens Holiday Festival is located at 1418 Descanso Drive in La Canada. For more information visit http://www.descansogardens.org/site/holidayfest.cfm

Wednesday, Dec. 6
A Christmas Carol @ Glendale Centre Theatre
The Charles Dickens tale is the quiessential Christmas story. For those living under a rock for the past century, Ebenezer Scrooge was one of the most wicked of characters, consumed by greed he was haunted by three ghosts (Ghost of Christmas Past, Ghost of Christmas Present and Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come).  And while this may sound a bit Halloween, true to the Christmas spirit, lessons are learned and goodness is spread throughout. Check out this classic retelling during the holiday season. You don’t want to be thought of as a scrooge. Glendale Centre Theatre is located at 324 North Orange St. in Glendale. For more information visit www.glendalecentretheatre.com
