One of the albums that this L.A. band put out in the ’70s was called Revolucion, but the group was not initially involved in the Chicano Movement civil rights struggle that began the decade before. In the Eye of the Storm is a two-DVD set with one disc being a documentary wherein the band members explain that although they were proud of their Latino heritage they were too busy making their own statement through music to be involved in politics.
It wasn’t until the music gained them a modicum of popularity that they became a face of the movement by playing lots of benefit concerts for the cause. The concert portion of this package was taped in 2008 at the Avalon in Santa Clara and opens with a smoking version of “El Grito” before moving into a selection of favorites: “Chicano Chant,” “Mas Zacate” and their signature tune, “Viva Tirado.”
In the Eye of the Storm is currently available.
