Include new wave, electro quartet Metric in that list, now invading the United States via their first performance DVD, Live at Metropolis, which was recorded live on their home turf of Montreal. The band’s energy translates perfectly on DVD with the help of some artsy camera work.
Visual effects are plentiful, like the grainy and faint texture added for a vintage feel in “Poster of a Girl,” camera angles that simultaneously change to the music’s beat and even some audience POV shots during the electric “Combat Baby.” It’s a fusion of music video sleekness and underground club atmosphere.
But the obvious stand out is frontwoman Emily Haines (also a member of Canadian music collective Broken Social Scene), looking almost angelic in a white dress against a shadowy background. She exudes so much seductive energy that she’ll definitely make the guys want her and the girls want to be her.
But no matter how amazing the band and the concert footage, something feels like it’s missing: Could it be the obvious lack of bonus features? For it to be phenomenal, they could’ve thrown in some interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. After all, every fan wants to try to get backstage after a show – why couldn’t we at least experience that on DVD?
Extras: music videos of “Monster Hospital,” “Poster of a Girl” and “Empty.”
