Hawaii’s favorite party band shot this tape over two nights last year at the Troubadour. Each night’s portion of the show features a gimmick, with the first night’s being a four-song medley of “Tongues,” “Feels Good,” “Trade Winds” and “Your Way.” After Pepper’s manager, “Coach,” struts on stage blowing his whistle, the band announces that the tooting means a “four-song penalty” is in order. Bikini-clad girls dance while holding up placards with the song’s appropriate number on them as singer Bret Bollinger belabors the counting of the four songs with pointless comments like, “That was one …” The first night wraps up with a new song, “Punk Rock Cowboy,” and gives the incessantly singing-along audience a break for a minute.
The film from the second night includes the band’s two biggest hits, “Ashes” and “Give it Up,” which sound considerably different from their studio versions. Bollinger invites all the girls (gimmick No. 2) in attendance onto the stage for the finale of “Naughti Girl.”
The live crowd certainly enjoyed all of Pepper’s goofy bravado and endless exhortation to make noise, but most viewers of this DVD will just find it distracting. If you really want to enjoy Pepper’s soulful dub-punk, stick to the CDs.
