Company of Angels’ festival of short plays is currently underway at the historic Alexandria Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. This third installment entitled “L.A. Views III: Hunger and the City” explores different faces of hunger in humanity not limited to cravings for food, but wants and needs of the human spirit: the activist hungry to be heard, the son famished for his father’s love or siblings starved for the understanding to accept their differences.
My favorite short piece was “The Sure Fire Winners,” written by Donald Jolly, about a father and son who are homeless and walk into a restaurant run by a transvestite and her father. Isaax Cruz’s performance as the transvestite is outrageously funny and makes the entire evening worthwhile.
Company of Angels Theatre is located at 501 S. Spring St., Los Angeles. For more information, visit companyofangels.org.
