When doing a live album, it has to be great. This is the one chance that you, as the artist, get to bring listeners into your show.

The mix is the biggest issue with Jonny Lang’s new offering. His vocals are strong, but the band is lost. For a gifted guitar player he misses the tone, and we end up with a thin-sounding album. The exception is “Red Light.” The slow, wandering song is the only one that really makes you feel like you’re at the show.

Lang still has the skills and surrounds himself with the best around, but with the availability of live recording today, it’s a shame that this comes off as more of a studio album than a virtual seat at a killer show.
