The La Mirada Theatre does Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies proud. The script of “Dinner With Friends” is profound, and the actors execute the characters exquisitely.

The play follows two couples: one happily married, the other falling apart. The couples have been inseparable for the past 12 years. They have nice dinners, vacations with the kids and never expected anything to hinder their suburban perfection. Now, with one marriage on the rocks, the play deals with the issues of divorce for not only the separating two, but their closest friends.

Cate Cohen (Beth) smoothly ties in her quirkiness with immense depth, while Melanie Lora (Karen) and Kevin Weisman (Gabe) portray the annoyingly chipper couple with both weight and authenticity. To stand out in a cast this talented is nearly impossible, but Patrick Fabian (Tom) does so effortlessly. He has a tremendous lovability factor that fortuitously outweighs his pigheaded qualities.
