You have to appreciate the irony of such a well-made film paying tribute to the man roundly believed to be the worst director of all time. Ed Wood covers the gamut of the title character’s career, from his budding friendship with plunging star Bela Lugosi (played sympathetically and hilariously by Martin Landau) to the creation of the critically reviled but culturally cherished Plan 9 From Outer Space. Wood’s techniques are inspiring even when you know they lead to absolutely terrible films, and the patently reliable Johnny Depp plays him like he knew him his whole life.

Best extra: commentary with Landau, Director Tim Burton and crew. Also: a collection of making-of featurettes, music video, trailer, deleted scenes. Not much material on the real Ed Wood, unfortunately.
