The band has been called a member of the "grindcore" genre, but we seem to always rename genres that already exist. I consider Napalm Death a regular ol’ death metal band, which just sounds better and simpler to me. Nonetheless, Napalm Death returns to us with a strong new release, The Code is Red…Long Live the Code.

"Silence is Deafening," "Right You Are," "Sold Short," "Pledge Yourself to You" and "Morale" are highlights on this heavy-ass, heart-pounding album. Imagine taking Slayer, Sepultera and Morbid Angel and throwing them into a blender with some garlic, oregano and abortion sprinkles and you’d have Napalm Death.

Mark "Barney" Greenway’s vocals are your typical death metal Cookie Monster grind, but some of the stuff actually has a bit of melody, which is refreshing. Mitch Harris, sole guitarist, creates enough shredding distortion to bring the walls down, while the rhythm section of Danny Herrera on drums and Shane Embury on bass syncs up well with the hardcore pounce of The Code.

Check out backing vocals by Jello Biafra, Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed and Jeff Walker (ex-Carcass). The metal superstars create a fine addition to the mayhem.
