As the follow-up to the Pennsylvania-born quartet’s impressive Saturate (2002), this sophomore production maintains the flow of grunge-like drone and penetrating rock melody.
"So Cold," the first single off of We Are Not Alone, begins with intermingling guitars and builds with spacious drumbeats, yet remains nestled in a mid-tempo bed with potent, emotional vocals.
Meanwhile, the little gem "Forget It" escalates with each verse, with a chorus that features co-writing by vocalist Ben Burnley and Grammy-winning artist Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), who also lends his guitar artistry to the power ballad. Corgan has been credited by both Burnley and pop icons Berlin as a collaborator who gently pushes his recording partners to new, creative heights.
"Follow," one of the disc’s meatier, high-tempo, guitar-driven tracks, was also co-written by Burnley and Corgan and masterfully mixed by the acclaimed Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Sepultura, Limp Bizkit). Wallace is consistently patient in achieving the right instrumental-vocal balance in his versatile recordings.
