You may know Tiffany Thornton for her role as Tawni Hart on Disney’s “Sonny With A Chance,” but you may not know that the actress was diagnosed with meningitis at the age of 19, and developed a case so severe that she was hospitalized for 10 days.
“It was a terrifying experience for me, as the on-set was so sudden and the flu-like symptoms were awful,” she reflects.
This experience has inspired Thornton to raise awareness about the disease through the organization Voices of Meningitis.
“I realized not a lot of people knew about the disease and the devastating effects it can have on a child's life,” she explains about why she became involved. “It can lead to permanent deafness, blindness, loss of limbs and even death within 24 hours. It was very important to me to be a part of helping people learn about meningitis, and the fact that there is a vaccine available.”
As part of her efforts to get the word out about meningitis and ways to prevent it, Thornton is headlining a benefit concert at the Roxy on April 22, along with special guests Pop! Fiction, Savvy and Mandy, Savannah Outen, Trevor Jackson and Booboo and Fivel.
“I’m excited for my fans to hear my country music, and some songs they haven't heard yet,” says Thornton. “I just pray the fans have a great time! I know they will because all my friends who are performing are super talented and fun to be around.”
In addition to her singing and her acting, Thornton is busy with several upcoming projects as well.
“I have a new jewelry line with my sister-in-law Sarah, I am working on my country music album, I’m developing a baby clothing line, writing a children's book, working on my cookbook, developing a design show and a few more things,” says the self-proclaimed workaholic. “Oh yeah, and having a baby late summer!”
Even with a baby on the way, the 26-year-old has no plans on stopping her rising career.
“I have always had a passion for acting and singing and I will do both for as long as I can,” she says.
See Thornton perform a live acoustic set at the Roxy, 9009 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA on April 22. Tickets start at $25, and can be purchased online here.
