Needless to say, an oyster festival is probably one of the most unique festivals a person can experience in his or her lifetime.  On October 13, Southern California residents will have the rare opportunity to experience one by attending the Ventura Oysterfest at the San Buenaventura State Beach Park. This festival offers great music, fine cuisine, crafted beers and local wines.

As its names suggests, yes – there will be plenty of oysters.  The festival will feature oyster farms throughout California and greater California, including The Jolly Oyster, Drakes Bay Oyster Company, Tomales Bay Oyster Company, Pickleweed Point Oyster Co. and Carlsbad Aquafarm. Who knows? With so many oysters, you might find a shiny pearl!

But don’t think oysters are the only delicacies on the menu.

Since the Oysterfest is keeping Ventura County’s tradition of sustainable farming as part of the theme, it will feature the county’s top restaurants that have a history of purchasing locally and sustainably. Vendors include The SideCar Restaurant, Osteria Monte Grappa, Twenty88 Food & Drink, Ventura Meat Company, Loo Hoo’s Asian Comfort Food and Watermark Restaurant, just to name a few.

You can also learn how to whip up enticing dishes from three renowned chefs and all about sustainable farming in the marquee tent.  Representatives from the oyster farms will hold a town hall forum discussing the benefits and techniques of sustainable farming.

Hold on: What’s great food without great drinks? Wineries such as the Old Creek Ranch Winery, Vino V Wines, Four Brix Winery and more will supply wines that have been perfectly selected for the foods available.  For the beer lovers out there, local companies including Surf Brewery, Anacapa Brewing Company, and more will provide crafted beer.

With your stomachs full (and alcohol in you system), the best thing to do is just dance it all off! Experience the rock/reggae/soul/Latin music styles of eclectic band, Rey Fresco; the petite fiddler/singer Amanda Show & The Cute Guys; the folk/rock sounds of The Silent Comedy; and Jeff Hershey’s soulful voice.  All of these musical guests will be giving memorable performances.

As mentioned before, this is a sustainable event, meaning that the event will be providing eco-friendly food containers and utensils and paperless ticketing. As a reward to those who decide to carpool or ride a bike to the festival – parking is free! Partake in the festival’s sustainable goals and help them reach a five percent maximum landfill.

If you’re more into playing games and being a little bit more active, don’t worry; the Oysterfest has you covered. You, your friends and family can start an intense competition of Frisbee, golf and horseshoes and participate in beanbag games.

To chronicle your experience and bring home a souvenir, the Oysterfest is also setting up novelty photo booths throughout the festival for your own amusement – say cheese!

As you can see, the Ventura Oysterfest will be more than a great time! But what’s even better is that proceeds from the event will actually be channeled back into the community through the non-profit Friends of Channel Coast State Parks. This non-profit benefits the environment through valuable, education and voluntary contributions, so you can attend the Oysterfest knowing that you are giving back to the community and environment.
