The nation’s collective student loan balance has hit $1 trillion, and it continues to rise. According to the New York Times, many students are trying to defray some of the costs of college. In some rare instances, there are student who can actually work their way through college in a normal amount of time without debt and little or no need-based financial aid unless they have an unusual combination of bravery, luck and discipline, the New York Times said.

The report also cited an example of former college students working their way through college. Such is the case with current Representative Virginia Foxx, a Republican from North Carolina, who worked while in college.
