With more than half of the music industry’s revenues coming from online sales, music piracy has posed a very big threat to record labels. The good news? Music piracy is currently on the decline; 2012 saw the first increase in digital music sales for the first time since 1999. One factor to the increase may be online radio stations such as Spotify and Pandora, which have provided online listeners a legal alternative to file sharing. Also, due to increased public distrust with illegitimate downloading sites, 20 percent of users have ceased use altogether.
