The American Institute of Economic Research has ranked the Top 10 best college towns in the U.S., and it's a surprising list. Ithaca, New York, which is home to both Cornell University and Ithaca College, ranks first. That particular town is followed by Ames (Iowa), State College (Pennsylvania), Iowa City (Iowa), Corvallis (Oregon), Champaign-Urbana (Illinois), Lafayette (Indiana), Lawrence (Kansas), Morgantown (West Virginia), and Columbia (Missouri).
In determining the best college town, AIER used criteria such as student diversity, unemployment rate, cost of living and degree attainment, among others.
