University of California President Mark Yudof is retiring in August, so a national search is expected to launch to find his replacement. According to reports, there is no obvious heir lined up inside the system to take Yudof's place.

"The University of California is the Mt. Everest of higher education both domestically and internationally. There are leaders who see Mt. Everest and want to make the climb just because it is what it is," said Molly Corbett Broad, the president of the American Council on Education, according to the Los Angeles Times. Broad noted that strong candidates will emerge.
