June 16 marked the annual Miss USA pageant, in which the winner, Miss Connecticut, was not the only one generating a buzz. Marissa Powell (Miss Utah) is receiving negative attention to an answer she gave when asked what her thoughts were on the fact that women in the U.S. are still paid less than men. Her already-weak response concluded with, “That is the biggest problem, and I think especially the men are seen as the leaders of this, and so we need to try to figure out how to create education better so that we can solve this problem. Thank you.” Many are critical of both her entire answer and the fact that she used the phrase “how to create education better,” a sad irony on the exact point she was trying to make.
