More than one million veterans enrolled into colleges nationwide, and even more will be attending within the next few years. At California community colleges, more than 44,000 veterans enrolled last fall. Nearly half of the community colleges have veterans centers that allow veterans to meet with others and find out information about classes, enrolling and support.

However, some campuses do not provide all the support veterans need during their academic careers. There are not enough trained staff members and faculty to deal with serious disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injury. In addition, only 40 percent receive educational benefits while attending college.
