Just because we live in sunny Los Angeles, that doesn’t mean we can’t play in the snow, ski or snowboard. Luckily for us, there’s a ski resort located in the San Gabriel Mountains, only 90 minutes away: Mountain High.
Mountain High is actually made up of three resorts—East, West and North – and there are 59 individual trails that are perfect for some serious shredding.
Hurry and plan your trip before the winter season is over!
HOW CAN I BUY TICKETS & LIFT PASSES?
Mountain High has numerous ticket prices, passes and deals to choose from. The Flex Ticket lets you have a 4 or 8-hour block of time on the slopes, and the Point Ticket lets you choose the number of runs you wish to take per day. There are also season passes, VIP passes and more. If you’re going with three friends, purchase The Quad Ticket for just $79. It allows you to ski from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for a little more than $19 a person, saving you about 40 percent. If you’re going with a group of six people, the 6 Pack deal lets you purchase six adult 8-hour tickets for $199 – this is just $33 per ticket, saving you 52 percent! Go to mthigh.com for more ticketing information.
WHEN SHOULD I GO?
Now! In case you haven’t noticed, it’s been a pretty warm winter in SoCal. However, don’t worry, there is snow at the resort – 19 inches have fallen so far this season, and they actually make real snow with their large snowmaking system. With temperatures ranging from the high 30s at night to the mid-50s during the day, you should take advantage of this great weather while you can. Plan a weekend trip, or better yet, go on a Thursday, when the resort hosts its weekly “College Night” (see ARE THERE PLACES TO PARTY? below)!
SHOULD I STAY IN A CABIN OR HOTEL?
Since Mountain High is so close to L.A., you don’t really to stay the night. However, if you want to make it a weekend getaway with your friends, you should definitely do so!
As far as hotels go, there is the Canyon Creek Inn nearby (which provides WiFi, Direct TV, etc.), but to really have an authentic weekend away in the mountains, you should rent a cabin. Besides, it’s way more fun to rent a cabin with a group of friends, since it gives you that comfy, home-like feeling you’ll love. Plus, a cabin allows you to bring more people to the “party.” Check out the Wrightwood Vacation Homes, which offers three charming cabins only five minutes away from the Mountain High ski resort. Be warned: Rates can get a little high. The four-bedroom All Pine Inn, for example, costs $690 from two weekend nights, but if you bring 10 people, that’s only $69 a person -- not bad. Visit wrightwoodvacationhomes.com for more info.
WHERE CAN I EAT?
If you rent a cabin, you can buy groceries and make your own food. However, if you want to eat out, there are plenty of great food joints on the resort. Angeles Crest Café offers fantastic breakfast burritos, North Base Lodge has grab-n-go treats, and Big Pines BBQ has mouthwatering pulled-pork sandwiches. See mthigh.com for a list of restaurants and locations.
ARE THERE PLACES TO “PARTY”?
Of course, you can always buy a couple of handles and a six-pack to booze it up in your cabin or hotel room with your buddies. Or you check out the other drinking opportunities at the resort:
Thursday is THE day college students should experience Mountain High! From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Thursday, the resort will have a kickass party called “College Night,” featuring giveaways, drink specials, music, $1 hot dogs, night riding and contests. You can ride during these hours for only $20 if you show your college ID.
On Feb. 22 and March 15, you can celebrate “Craft Beer Days” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Sun Deck. This event is basically a micro-brew festival where you can enjoy samples and draft beer for as low as $8.50.
BullWheel Bar and Grill is located on the west resort and serves up some pretty mean nachos. It’s a pub-style restaurant with appealing drinks and entrees. With big screen TVs perfect for watching major sporting events, BullWheel is a popular place for everyone to relax, warm up by the fire and enjoy the menu options.
For a lively crowd and atmosphere, head to the Foggy Goggle, also on the west resort. The bar features seven draft beers and weekly premium selections.
Lastly, the Snowshoe Saloon is definitely worth checking out. Located on the east resort, this saloon offers Hot Toddies, beer, après ski cocktails and more.
Mountain High is the perfect ski and snowboard destination for SoCal college students – don’t miss out on its great deals and one-of-a-kind experiences!
