The Los Angeles Times reports Occidental College has made a pledge to ban investments in assault weapons companies, meaning the college will "stay away from any investments in companies that manufacture military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition for general public sale."

According to the Times, this a first of its kind for any American college or university.

Ever since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012, faculty members have been urging the college trustees to make the move. In addition, realizing that colleges and school campuses were targets for mass shootings is what swayed the trustees to make this decision.
