According to the Associated Press and Sacramento Bee, the number of California residents applying for college financial aid jumped 74 percent over the last six years, reports the Daily Democrat.

In the 2012-13 academic year, the U.S Department of Education reported 2.65 million graduate and undergraduate California students applied for financial aid.

Experts say the economy is a large reason as to why so many students are applying for financial aid.
