It's time to celebrate, #KatyCats! All of your downloading and on-demand streaming has paid off.
The Recording Industry of America (RIAA) has recognized Katy Perry as its most awarded digital act in the history of Gold and Platinum awards. Basically, Perry has sold a lot more music digitally than anyone ever. EVER.
"Katy Perry is a force to be reckoned with in music," said RIAA Chairman & CEO Cary Sherman in a statement. "She embodies all that makes a true global superstar: the musical talent, the extraordinary drive and genuine charisma, and an intrinsic connection with her fan."
Thanks to early hits such as "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot N Cold" and her newest songs, including "Dark Horse," "Roar" and "Birthday," Perry garnered 72 million cumulative digital single certifications counting downloads and on-demand streams. She's the first artist to surpass the 70 million digital award threshold, which is 20 million ahead of any artist! (Yep, she beat out fellow female superstars Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Queen Bey, etc.).
On Instagram, Perry expressed her gratitude to the RIAA: "Over 72 million served! Thanks for the award RIAA! #THISISHOWWEDO," she posted next to a photo of her celebrating the achievement.
Go ahead a roar along with her, #KatyCats!
