CULTURE COLLIDE
If you like checking out music from other nations, here’s a chance to hear some buzz bands from overseas without leaving the country.

The Culture Collide Festival takes place at various Sunset Boulevard-adjacent venues, like the Echo and Taix, from Oct. 16 -18 and will present more than 40 acts that come primarily from outside the U.S. Performers will include Nina Persson from Sweden, Skyroads from Israel, Holland’s Go Back to the Zoo, Korea’s From the Airport, Mark Bonafide from Singapore, the Revolters from Turkey and an Australian contingent that includes Fractures, the Delta Riggs, Dune Rats, KLP, Gossling and Glass Towers. Bands from the U.K., Peru, Colombia, Canada, Ireland, Norway and Costa Rica will also appear along with a handful of American groups including Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Cloud Nothings.

NEW RELEASES FROM L.A. ACTS AND NOTABLE AREA SHOWS
AFTERNOONS – You probably don’t want to say “no” to this L.A. six-piece when their upcoming album is called Say Yes. The album is due to drop on Oct. 21 but you can get a generous preview of the new music when the band plays a record release show at El Cid on Oct. 17.

AS BLOOD RUNS BLACK – These metal men have a new one scheduled to drop on the Standby Records imprint; look for Ground Zero on Oct. 27. Hear some of the new music live when the guys play a show at Chain Reaction in Anaheim Nov. 29.

CALICO – The three ladies of this Valley-based roots band will find out in mid-November if they'll be bringing home awards for their three L.A. Music Awards nominations. In the meantime, you can hear them play music from new album Rancho California in a California Roots Union show at T Boyles in Pasadena on Oct. 17.

RAY GOREN – Goren’s just-released five-song EP Save My Soul is his second of the year; you might say the young rocker’s stuff is so good he has to dole it out a little at a time. Still in his teens, the guitarist has already worked with famed producer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kiss) and sidemen from the bands of Paul McCartney and Tim McGraw.

ROB STONE – If you like to dance to a bluesy beat, then Gotta Keep Rollin’, the new album from Rob Stone, is just what the doctor ordered. Full of tunes such as the swingin’ rockabilly of “Move Baby Move” and the roadhouse rock of “Lucky 13,” the album is geared to keeping the dance floor packed. See for yourself when Stone opens for Charlie Musselwhite at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills on Oct. 24.

MATT TURK – Turk composed the score for the documentary film The Lion of Judah, contributed his take on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman” to feature film Fred Claus, and his new album Cold Revival is produced by filmmaker David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers). So yes, the mandolinist’s music can be described as quite cinematic. Cold Revival was recorded in Los Angeles with the aid of sidemen who’ve played with the likes of Jason Mraz, Sheryl Crow, Sting and Good Charlotte.
