If you're not careful you will most definitely miss this tiny, well-hidden jewel on the bustling stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. One narrow, tall door represents the entrance to L Scorpion. There is no sign on the building, just a small, wood fold-out placed on the sidewalk with a picture of a black scorpion on it.

Upon entering L Scorpion all you will see is the backlit wall showcasing hundreds of varieties of tequila. The remainder of the restaurant is sheer darkness illuminated only by the few glowing candles sprinkled throughout the bar and dining area.

The long, narrow bar opens up in the back to a small dining room with a few cozy leather booths and tables. Scantily clad waitresses prance around L Scorpion in their black leather boots carrying creative cocktails and mouth-watering Mexican appetizers to the waiting patrons.

After being seated at a small, dim table we decide to order a drink. This will prove to be a challenge. The tequila menu seems endless and the specialty drink menu offers truly the most unique and delectable concoctions I have ever witnessed.

From the Pomegranate Caiperina to the Cactus Mojito the combinations are intriguing. I decide on the Sangria de Champagna (champagne sangria) and my dining partner goes for the Lychee Margarita – both wise choices.

The Mexican cuisine at L Scorpion is served tapas-style (Spanish appetizers) in small portions and meant for sharing. The Ceviche de Camaron y Pescado is fresh with a lot of cilantro and lime and chunks of shrimp and halibut. The Sopes de Pollo comes in the form of three round pillows of masa topped with marinated shredded chicken, black beans, lettuce, diced tomatoes and onions and is incredible.

Nachos are always a safe bet and at L Scorpion it's no different. A huge mound of hot tortilla chips with real cheddar cheese and all the fixings was the best I've had in a long time.

The waitress gives great suggestions on menu items and the kitchen whips everything up in record time. The manager insists on an after-dinner Kiwi Margarita to share and how could we say no? The drink is refreshing and thick with real fruit pulp and is the perfect closer to a wonderful meal.

Wednesday nights the bar scene gets hopping with DJ Eric Jag and happy hour is celebrated every night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the bar. Swing by Thursday nights for Tequila Tasting Night and explore a variety of specialty tequilas and tasty Mexican dishes for $45 per person.

And don't expect to find that cheap college tequila here – L Scorpion services the tequila lover with Mexico's finest blue agave and mescals. The tequiliers (tequila sommeliers) offer guests food pairings, tequila flights and table-side margarita presentations for the true connoisseur.

L Scorpion is a great place to go with a group of friends or family for some exceptional drinks and delicious appetizers. The cocktails have standard prices for Los Angeles, around $11 each, and each sip makes every penny worth it. And the tapas are reasonably priced around $10 each and offer unique spins on some traditional Mexican fare.
