Melvin Van Peebles is an extremely interesting filmmaker, father and all-around Renaissance Man. Among his many projects, he directed 1970’s Watermelon Man and wrote and directed one of the most controversial movies in American history, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

Director Joe Angio chronicles Van Peebles’ life, from recording spoken word albums in the studio, to jogging around town to satisfy all of his lady friends at home, to becoming a Wall Street options trader. There is nothing this man didn’t do! Supposedly, he’s currently working on a double album with Madlib to be released on Stones Throw Records.

If all you know about this man is that he’s Mario Van Peebles’ pops, you must see this film.

Extras: Peebles’ TV commentaries and live performances.
