After a long day at school or work, all your mind, body and soul really want is to relax and unwind, preferably in cool temperatures during these hot summer nights. Luckily, Stone Cold Grooves on Tuesday nights at Air Conditioned Supper Club in Venice provides the space in the place for a jazz, R&B and funk-loving race with soul music from the late ’40s to the late ’70s.

Don Stine, also known as DJ Big Kahuna is the teacher for your Tuesday night music lessons. Learning can be fun! Especially when the teacher can school you on “The Whole Black Music Experience,” as Stine puts it.

While Stine has been DJing at Air Conditioned for only six months, he has been spinning for over a decade, amassing over 3,000 records.

“People may have heard the part of a record that’s been used for a sample in a hip-hop song or whatever, but I stick to the whole record, where the sample originated from. People don’t need to listen to strictly hip-hop to get down,” he emphasizes.

With a spacious interior that’s just as ultra mod as ultra modern, the orange, black, red and brown colored padded walls with matching leather chairs give a very relaxed feel, complimented with vibrant colored lighting. Beautiful chandeliers and large video screens are nice accents to the two rooms.

Now we know that soul music played from the ’60s and ’70s remains fabulous and easy to dance to. Even for the uneducated this is a no-brainer. Perhaps you wouldn’t know that music from the late ’40s could be just as easy to groove to, until DJ Kahuna gives you another lesson.

Knowledge is power, and soul music remains one of the most powerful things on this planet. In these trying times, especially after a long day doing your thing, it’s nice to know that if we’re willing to learn, we can still have that power.
